When visiting Mexico, you have to be adventurous. It is not only a place filled with the usual clichés: tequila, drugs, violence, party, hot women ( 😆 ) and great beaches.
Mexico is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. You’ll find it all: delicious food, all kinds of terrain and climate, unparalleled wealth of flora and fauna, contrasting ideologies, a fusion between tradition and modernization a crucible of prehispanic and mestizo cultures, magnificent hotels of course, warmth of Mexicans wherever you go.
If you have decided to visit Mexico and want to be prepared to experience your stay to the fullest, then you are in for a ride! To enjoy Mexico, you really have to infiltrate a little, get involved in customs, visit the villages and try new things. Forget about locking yourself in the hotel or taking a guided tour.
As a Mexican, I will share 12 things or yes you must experience when visiting our country:
(I must add, this is not exclusive to any one city, but to the essence of Mexico itself)
Get on a city bus / Subway
Experience the adrenaline of those things that as Mexicans we are used to suffer/live through every day; travel standing, jumping at every pothole, squeeze between people…sure they will become anecdotes to tell.
Travel tip: There will be a million people trying to sell you things inside the cabin, especially in the subway. Ignore the chanting, singing, screaming and begging. Unless they sell something you need.
You can not go to Mexico without trying tacos. Not the hard crust, yellowish, strange thing they sell in other countries. THE REAL DEAL. Nothing compares trying the soft,
…or all the typical food you can
Generally, you will feel that you lack time (and stomach) to test all Mexican food. If something can recommend for your trip worthwhile it is to try the most typical dishes you can.
Chilaquiles, enchiladas, churros, tamales and atole, pozole red, soups, huaraches, mole, quesadillas, chilaquiles, sweet bread … Whew!
Enjoying Mariachi music
Mexican Mariachi live, accompanied by a beautiful view and a good dinner… What a combination! You will learn that it’s easier than ever to understand and sing the songs with the band as soon as you’ve got a few tequilas on you!
“Ay, ay, ay, aaaay… Canta y no llores
Porque cantando se alegran, cielito lindo los corazones”
If you want to learn more about the mariachi culture, and how it fits int the Mexican ambience for parties, nights out and even funerals, I leave this trailer below. It happens through the perspective of a foreigner, so it will sure be easier to understand.
Visit historic sites and natural beauties
No matter where you are, most Mexican cities have natural or archaeological sites you can not miss, from pyramids, forests, lakes, springs, sinkholes, valleys, cathedrals …
And it’s rather easy to enter, touch, interact and photograph everything… If you are a photography freak, Mexico will be paradise to your eyes and your lens!
Going out dancing
Another thing you can not miss in Mexico is going to dance. Although there are a variety of clubs and nightclubs, to experience the Latin flavor I recommend you go for latin clubs and move your hips to the beat you hear. It may seem a little tricky in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a great way to meet people!
Eating with a Mexican family
Something that characterizes us as Mexicans is the ritual at lunchtime, from grandchildren to grandparents, even neighbors, all together talking, living, noisily. It even seems that the least we do is eat. Theres a hassle, everyone passing things around, possibly with background music, each one to their conversation topic.
Mexicans deliver hospitality by nature, so if you meet a Mexican, he will most definitely invite you over to his house!
Tip: Try not to arrive empty handed, especially if it is a family home. Cookies, desert, or even a small souvenir from your country will do, and will give you a great image.
Enjoy a soccer match at the stadium
Whether it’s women or men, children or adults, the passion for soccer is deeply rooted in Mexico, so if you want to feel the euphoria that goes beyond kicking a ball, do not hesitate to go to a game I personally do not like it, but I know it’s quite an exhilerating experience.
Or go to the “Luchas” (Wrestling)
Enjoy this show! It is a mix of sport and theater sequences, this is the most popular after soccer. Be careful if you are close to the ring as among the acrobats one of them could hut you in his attempt to make a dangerous leap out of the ring.
Leave your silent side home! Attending wrestling in Mexico is leaving all your worries aside. Get ready to shout, chant and whistle. It will be the perfect escape valve to forget the stress and become an accomplice of these gladiators.
Go to the beach
Mexican waters are warm and blend perfectly with the dreamy climate we have, besides the delight will come to your your eyes by being able to admire the natural beauty of these places.
Visit a market or flea/artisan market
“¡Pásele, guerita! ¿Qué se lleva, jefe? “. Although it’s not necessary to understand the meaning of these phrases, it is essential that you visit a market or flea market of the city; the variety of goods and culture of buying and selling from Mexican will leave a lot to remember. And of course, you will have a lot of bargaining to learn!
If you want to get to know the city you’ve visited, you must take a walking tour of its downtown streets, because it’s where the magic happens. You can sit at a bench, enjoy some street food and watch people interact with one another, most certainly offering you a smile. You will see the most beautiful buildings and monuments there. Probably a church or two.
Overall, Mexico is magic. I know every country has its magic, but I can say nothing less of my country. I live here, my family lives here, and I can understand how it’s paradise.
Don’t let yourself be guided by clichés or hateful candidates (yes, I’m talking about you, Trump). We are not criminals or rapists.
Have you ever been to Mexico?
